Gruthil's adventure

Gruthil Wayne Short Story

Well, here I am. Traveling alone again.
I thought these days were done when I was assigned a full squad of dull minded orcs in the middle of nowhere. Now, I am the slave to a random bunch of adventurers who want to me to run errands for them. Oh well, it beats dying. That reminds me, I wonder if chief ever expected me to really return from that god forsaken outpost. If the yetis or adventures didn’t kill me, the blasted cold would. Sigh… I don’t know if I should be counting my blessings I was picked up or if I should just run away now. It is not like this group has anything on me, or to offer me. Doesn’t matter, just a few more days of travel to this fortress of Gozreh to watch over this pirate. What an odd request…
Well, I finally made it to the Civil checkpoint called Frost Reach. It is a small outpost that consists mostly of tents and caravans. There is only one permanent structure in the middle of the checkpoint which looks like the rangers station. I guess that is where I should start if I want to sleep in a warm bed for once this week.
The lodge looks nicer from the inside than it does from the outside, that’s for sure. The walls are covered with wood panels that have intricate designs carved from the ceiling to the floor. The ceiling is adorned with a large antler chandelier with assorted rustic decorations. There is a small tavern as well with a few travelers sharing stories. I am surprised more people are not in here. The lodge is also an inn for travelers, who can afford to stay that is, which might explain why there are not many people in here. This place costs over a gold piece a day. I have some money on me, but it is not worth the expense. I guess it is the woods again for me…
“Hello there lad, you look like you are interested in staying tonight.” I turn to find a tall military looking man talking to me. Why would he be interested in me?
“I see your confusion clear as day on your face. My name is Rordres, the captain of this check point, and I am trading rooms for work. Do you think you are interested?”
“Depends” I said, “on what the work is and how nice the room is” I am not wasting my time on any more humans unless I get something out of it.
“of course” Rordres said, “the job is a standard guard duty. I need you to stand guard tonight and watch for the Gozreh thieves and stop them from stealing from the merchants. Their activity has been down the last couple of months, but recently they have been more aggressive and I am not sure why. Either way, we need more help. What do ya say?”
What luck, the Gozreh group I am looking for is about to land right into my lap. I took the job without second thought. “Yeah I will help you! Just point me to where I need to guard.”
